Classroom Management & Motivation
How do orderly classrooms increase learners’
motivation or/and classroom management? Explain based on your understanding of
factors that contribute to motivation and classroom management
Management and
Motivation:
It is hypothesized that, the
positive relationship between teachers and learners is the main pillar for a
successful learning and teaching environment. Therefore, a relationship-based
discipline which is a student-centered approach to classroom management depends
on teacher-student collaboration to maintain a safe, positive learning
environment. That is why it said that, the more well-built, mutually
respectful, personal teacher-learners relationships, the better the classroom
environment. Teachers help students meet academic and behavioral expectations
by emphasizing teacher empathy, unconditional positive regard, genuineness,
encouragement, and trust. In such an environment, students behave not because
they are afraid of punishment or because they seek a reward, but because they
know they are valued members of the classroom community. A relationship-based
approach to discipline is essential to the success of an inspired teacher. This
relation fosters a sense of student control that allows the learning experience
to be engaging and meaningful. Most importantly, tensions between teachers and
students are defined as conflicts, not misbehavior—allowing teachers to focus
on finding a resolution rather than an appropriate punishment. Hence, students
work harder when they believe their teacher cares about them.
Additionally, demonstrating
respect for students’ individuality can reduce the achievement gap.
Students in learners-centered
classroom develop better attitudes toward school, more positive
self-conceptions, and become more independent learners. This notion fosters
students’ intrinsic motivation, and increases performance and motivation.
Following is a
list of possible techniques to keep a sound classroom discipline:
- Teachers should treat students equally and set the same rules and requirements for all, regardless of their grades and results.
- All discipline problems should be tackled as they arise rather than left to become more complicate.
- Threats and angry outbursts will not help maintain discipline, especially when threats are not supported by action.
- Punishments should be proportional to misbehaviors and should comply with school policy and rules. Classroom rules should be reasonable and clear to students
